Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can affect individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It can occur in people of any ethnicity, nationality, or culture and at any age. In the United States, approximately 3.5 percent of adults experience PTSD every year, with women being twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with PTSD.

PTSD

Risk Factors

The risk factors for PTSD can be grouped into two parts: exposure to trauma and personal circumstances. Exposure to trauma can include living through dangerous events, getting hurt, witnessing a dead body, or experiencing childhood trauma. Feeling horror, helplessness, or extreme fear during a traumatic event can also contribute to PTSD. Not everyone who experiences trauma will develop PTSD, but understanding the risk factors can help identify those who may be more susceptible and provide early intervention or support when necessary.

Signs and Symptoms

Experiencing, witnessing, or learning about a traumatic event can lead to PTSD. Symptoms include intrusive thoughts, avoidance, changes in mood and cognition, and changes in arousal and reactivity. PTSD can be effectively treated with therapy, medication, or a combination of both. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of PTSD, seek professional help.

PTSD

Diagnosis

If you’ve experienced a traumatic event, you may be at risk of developing PTSD. To determine this, we’ll use a brief assessment with questions about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. If needed, a more comprehensive evaluation may follow, lasting 30-60 minutes. We’ll ask about your experiences, challenges, emotions, and physical health. With your permission, we may also speak with your family to better understand your situation. We aim to provide a safe and supportive environment for you throughout this process.

Treatment Plan

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can be debilitating, but effective treatment options are available. Medication, psychotherapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy are common treatments that can help alleviate symptoms. Currently, there is a waiting list for EMDR therapy. Finding the right treatment is crucial. Contact Journey Psyche to learn more and book an appointment.
