A calm guide for your psychiatry appointment
Sometimes technology doesn’t cooperate — and that’s okay.
If you’re having trouble joining your virtual appointment, it doesn’t mean you did anything wrong, and it doesn’t affect your care. These things happen more often than people realize, especially during stressful moments or when using a new device.
Our priority is your care and your safety, not the technology.
We build time and flexibility into our visits for this exact reason.
First — take a breath
If the visit isn’t connecting right away:
- You’re not late
- You’re not missing anything
- You’re not “doing it wrong”
We expect occasional tech issues and plan for them.
Common reasons virtual visits don’t connect
1. Device limitations
Some phones, tablets, or older computers may:
- Block pop-ups by default
- Struggle with video permissions
- Switch audio to the wrong speaker
This is especially common if:
- You’re using a work device
- You’re on an older phone or tablet
- You recently updated your system
2. Browser or app confusion
Virtual visits often open:
- In your browser (Safari, Chrome)
- Your inside a secure video window
If the page looks “stuck,” it’s often because:
- The browser is asking for camera/mic permission
- A permission prompt is hidden behind another window
3. Internet interruptions
Even brief drops in Wi-Fi or cellular signal can:
- Freeze the screen
- Prevent audio from connecting
- Cause the session to time out
This has nothing to do with you — it’s simply how video works.
Quick things you can try (optional)
Only if you feel up to it:
- Refresh the page once
- Make sure your camera and microphone are allowed
- Try switching from Wi-Fi to cellular (or vice versa)
- Close other apps that might be using audio/video
If none of this works — you can stop trying. You don’t need to troubleshoot endlessly.
If video isn’t working, care still continues
- Your provider may switch to a phone visit
- This is completely acceptable and commonly used
- Your care does not become “lesser” or rushed
What matters most
Psychiatric care is about:
- Being heard
- Feeling safe
- Having continuity
Technology is just the bridge — not the care itself.
If the bridge wobbles, we simply take another path.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the tech
That reaction makes sense.
Many people feel:
- Pressure to “get it right”
- Anxiety when something doesn’t work
- A sense of urgency or self-blame
Please know: we don’t interpret tech issues as avoidance, resistance, or disengagement. We see them for what they are — normal friction in a virtual world.
Bottom line
If you’re stuck:
- Pause
- Stay where you are
- We will reach you or adjust the visit as needed
Care doesn’t disappear because technology hiccups.
