Stress Management

Managing stress for a balanced mental health

Stress is our reaction to feeling under pressure or threatened. It occurs when we think we cannot manage or control a situation. Stress can be defined as a state of worry or mental tension caused by a problematic situation. A natural human response motivates us to address challenges and threats. Everyone experiences stress to some degree.

What causes stress?

Many things can cause stress, such as pressure, facing significant life changes, worrying about something, or not having control over a situation. Stressful life events, even seemingly insignificant ones, can have a direct impact on mental health. Factors influencing your stress include your comfort level in different situations, past experiences, available resources, and support from others. Certain events may cause stress at times, but not every time. For example, going shopping for food with enough time and money may not be stressful, but it might be if you have a tight budget or many other things to do.

Signs and Symptoms

Prolonged stress can cause symptoms such as a racing heart, racing thoughts, and hyperactive behavior. Stress can also make you feel irritable, angry, impatient, overwhelmed, or anxious, unable to switch off racing thoughts, worsen mental health problems, have difficulty breathing, experience panic attacks, and have blurred vision or sore eyes. Recognizing these signs is important for addressing our mental and physical well-being.

Diagnosis

Verbal and written tests assess a person’s thinking, behaviors, and emotions. These tests provide detailed information about a person’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses. After the evaluation, our specialists hold a feedback session with you to discuss findings and treatment recommendations.

Treatment Plan

If you’re experiencing depression or anxiety alongside stress, antidepressants may help. Medication can treat physical symptoms of stress, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or high blood pressure. Talking with a Journey Psyche provider can help you deal with stress and become more aware of your thoughts and feelings. Complementary and alternative therapies like acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal remedies, hypnotherapy, massage, Tai Chi, yoga, and meditation can also help with stress symptoms.
