The exact cause of anxiety disorder is unknown. Still, there are several risk factors, including a family history of anxiety, past trauma, ongoing or extreme stress, having an illness or disease, other mental health challenges, substance use, and chemical imbalances in the brain. Some research suggests that certain personality traits may contribute to the development of anxiety disorders, such as being timid or shy, wanting to be in control of everything at once, or being easily flustered.
Some common symptoms of anxiety disorder include constant fear or worry, nervousness or restlessness, overthinking situations, sweating or trembling, difficulty focusing, problems sleeping, depression, and fear of social situations. You might avoid people, places, or things that trigger your anxious feelings. It’s crucial to note that anxiety symptoms can range from mild to severe, and in some cases, they can be debilitating.
If you’re experiencing symptoms of anxiety, it’s important to seek professional medical help. To diagnose anxiety, our team at Journey Psyche will review your medical history, history of trauma, lifestyle habits, medications, and symptoms. We may also ask about your emotions and behavior patterns.
The treatment plan for anxiety may include lifestyle changes, habit-breaking, and prescription medicines to reduce side effects. Buspirone and antidepressants are standard medication options. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft are used to treat anxiety. In addition to talk therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is also offered for treating PTSD, traumas, mental focus, depression, and panic attacks. Currently, there is a waiting list for EMDR therapy.
